Dear Malaysian Students’ Organisation,
I am a student at ANU, in the School of Archaeology and Anthropology. I am currently conducting research for my Masters in Forensic Anthropology. I am investigating cross-sectional shapes found in different ethnic hair. This research is being undertaken to improve and enhance forensic anthropology and forensic science methods. If the confocal microscope works then it can provide a faster more effective way to generate cross-sections of hair. There would be less preparation time and no need for cutting hairs in order to produce cross-sections as is currently the case, this means that potentially valuable relics or evidence aren’t destroyed. It is expected that the results of this work will make it easier for anthropologists and forensic scientists to classify human remains as to their ancestry, and the origin on the body of loose hairs. The hair samples will involve different regions from the body. These will include for males/females: head, facial, legs, arms and pubic area. Students will pluck/cut the hairs themselves in their own time and in the privacy of their homes. Hairs will not be pluck/cut by the researcher. For this study I will need the participation of males and females across different ethnicities. I have contacted your association, in hopes that you could forward this email on to your members. If you are interested in helping a fellow student please contact me:
